Dear Griselda. I have received copies of all your mails so am up to date on all your activities. Many congrats on your two graduates - they are now about to step out into the world as independent individuals - you & your hubby must be proud of them..........
So glad that Pat has got the idea of the Marines out of his system and is settling down with such a sensible profession with plenty of 'salida laboral'. It reminds me of when Gavin came home one year having made all the arrangements to enter the Policia Federal and needed our signature as he was a minor. Of course Angus & I were horrified and refused to have anything to do with it. It was at that terrible time when the Policia were murdering and torturing students and anyone who didn't agree with the military government. When we asked him why he wanted to join that bunch of assasins he told us that he wanted to try to change them from the inside - he was always a bit of an idealist!Anyway we both made such a fuss that he put it out of his mind and went down to Tierra del Fuego and joined Defensa Civil which handles air & sea & mountain rescues which he enjoyed very much until he discovered that it was riddled with politics and they were going to use him as a scapegoat for all their finangling with government funds, so he quickly got out and joined the American oil companies who were perforating for oil out in the ocean, just off the Bahia San Sebastian. That was quite an adventure and it was they who transferred him to the oil wells up in Tartagal where he met Gabriela. They are both very well, with their lovely family, Nicole 13 (you gave her her first bath remember ?) and the twins Brenda & Neil who are now 10. They come down in the summer and take me with them to the seaside, usually in Uruguay whre the water is much warmer than Argentina as it's so close to Brazil. They're not very good correspondents as they're both so busy - you'll remember that she is a psychologist and also works at the Law Courts in Psicologia Forense. However they often speak and ask after you and send their fondest love.
I am impressed by the photos of the girls . one of them looks very like the famous painting of the Gioconda, you know, the Mona Lisa - it must be the Italian strain in their blood which they inherit both from you and their father...............
So glad that Robin is making such good progress in his scholastic curriculum and that he works at his own pace . it's so sad to see young people pushed and doesn't achieve anything anyway as it sets up a mental block.
What a wonderful trip you made to Valdez and what marvellous things you managed to see, what with the interesting & varied fauna and the breathtaking beauty of the scenery and watching the iceblocks falling off into the sea. So glad you went as it seems such a pity to live in such an interesting place and not see its natural wonders - I should talk as I've not seen the Cataratas del Iguazu, nor our Peninsula Valdez with its sea lions and penguins and the whales that frolic in the Bahia San Jorge in Madryn. Nor have I been down to Bariloche & San Martin de los Andes or seen the glacier break its bonds in Santa Cruz. This reminds me of Angus's mother. Euphie, who decided to celebrate her 80th birthday by making a trip down to Bariloche for the first time - she even went swinging up the mountain in a silla-carril and brought back a photo to prove it. So perhaps there's time for me still as I'm going into my eightysecond year and still going strong - I go to gym in the swimming pool, as well as swimming, three mornings a week. I also continue giving English lessons at home as well as doing a lot of work in my garden, all of which keep me pretty busy. The local pensioner's group often organize trips of this sort so I'll see if I can latch onto one before I'm too decrepit.............
Bueno my dear, I must sign off and catch my bus home. My very affectionate greetings to your hubby and to your wonderful children y reciba un beso y abrazo muy caluroso de tu madre que nunca te olvida.
